On Opportunities for Cyber Deviance

Cyber technology has revolutionized the modern workplace, offering both benefits and challenges. One significant impact of cyber technology is the creation of new opportunities for workplace deviance. With the widespread use of computers, the internet, and digital devices in daily operations, employees now have access to tools that can be used for illicit activities.

Cyber technology has facilitated workplace deviance through unauthorized access to sensitive information. Employees with technical skills can exploit vulnerabilities in the company's network to gain access to confidential data, such as financial records, customer information, or trade secrets. This unauthorized access can lead to data breaches, identity theft, or corporate espionage.

Additionally, the anonymity provided by the internet allows employees to engage in cyberbullying, harassment, or spreading malicious rumors about colleagues without fear of immediate repercussions. This form of deviant behavior can create a toxic work environment and negatively impact employee morale and productivity.

Moreover, the misuse of corporate resources for personal profit, including excessive personal internet browsing, online shopping, online gambling during work hours, and using company equipment to mine cryptocurrency, exemplifies workplace deviance enabled by cyber technology. These behaviors squander valuable company time and resources and threaten cybersecurity measures.

Furthermore, the rise of remote work and telecommuting due to technological advancements has blurred the boundaries between personal and professional life, making it easier for employees to engage in deviant behaviors during work hours without direct supervision.

In conclusion, cyber technology has undoubtedly created new avenues for workplace deviance by providing employees with tools and opportunities to engage in illicit activities. To address this issue, organizations must implement robust cybersecurity measures, establish clear policies regarding acceptable technology use, and train employees on ethical behavior in the digital age.

On the NIST Cybersecurity Framework

Discussion Post - 1/20/2024

For those not my professor, the prompt was
"From your readings of pages 1 - 21 of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework
Links to an external site. what benefit can organizations gain from using this framework, and how would you use it at your future workplace?"

The NIST Cybersecurity Framework offers organizations a structured and adaptable approach to managing and enhancing cybersecurity resilience. One key benefit is its emphasis on risk management, guiding organizations in identifying and assessing cybersecurity risks systematically. This enables prioritization of mitigation efforts, addressing the most critical issues based on risk assessments. Another thing the framework provides is a common language for communication across different teams within an organization, fostering a shared understanding of cybersecurity risks and strategies.

I would try to apply the framework in my future position by implementing the framework functions to the best of my ability in my position. Often, much of this is handled by higher sections or positions, but I would ensure that my areas were properly identified and protected at the very least so that those above me can support them in their functions.
